UTM Surveys — Quantifying Corrosion Loss in Steel Piles

What is Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement (UTM)?

KCC carries out underwater ultrasonic thickness measurement (UTM) surveys of steel piles and marine structures to quantify corrosion loss and remaining wall thickness. UTM data is essential for structural assessment and maintenance planning.

What's Included

  • Calibration of UTM equipment to pile material
  • Systematic thickness readings at defined grid points on pile surface
  • Recording of minimum, maximum, and average thickness at each measurement zone
  • Comparison of results against original design thickness
  • Formal UTM report with corrosion loss assessment and structural recommendations

Why This Matters

Visual inspection alone cannot quantify the extent of corrosion loss in steel piles. UTM surveys provide the quantitative data needed to assess remaining structural capacity and plan targeted remediation works.
