Scour Monitoring — Early Detection of Structural Risk

What is Scour Monitoring?

KCC carries out periodic scour monitoring surveys at bridge piers, piles, and marine structures to track scour development and provide early warning of structural risk. Surveys are carried out by divers using hand-held sonar and measurement tools, with results plotted against baseline surveys to identify trends.

What's Included

  • Baseline survey to establish existing seabed levels around the structure
  • Periodic repeat surveys at agreed intervals to monitor scour development
  • Measurement of scour depth and extent at each survey
  • Comparison of results against baseline and previous surveys
  • Reporting of scour development trends and recommendations for intervention

Why This Matters

Scour is a progressive process that can develop rapidly during storm events. Regular monitoring allows asset owners to detect scour development early and plan remediation before it reaches a level that threatens structural integrity.
